Description
The Nepean Valley between Penrith and the Blue Mountains has seen gradual and sustained growth since British settlement in the late-eighteenth century. Through the tapestry of individual and collective triumphs the region has evolved into a powerhouse of the nation.
The book focuses on the stories of triumphs – both big and small – over the last 200 years that helped to create a unique local culture. Dedicated people initially worked the land, in agriculture, viticulture and quarrying, then in factories and other industrialised settings.
This led to infrastructure being built to attract investment and bring more people to the area through roads, inns, rail and the associated bridges spanning the Nepean River and its tributaries. Local businesses were established, followed by civic order. Then there were schools, churches, hospitals, dams, clubs, shopping precincts and ultimately a motorway.
The stories of local exemplars include several Indigenous trailblazers, as well as homegrown artists, benefactors, entertainers, historians, journalists, novelists, and civic leaders of the highest order who grew up in Penrith.
Numerous local sporting stars won premierships, became world champions or captains of national sporting teams.
Most of the people profiled worked tirelessly in the background without any expectation of reward. Local jobs close to home are now a reality due to the attraction to the area of major employers and the growth of a booming tourism hub focused on the natural beauty of the river, the plains and the mountains, coupled with the modern retailing, recreation, museum and entertainment precincts.
Stories are divided into four parts (people and culture; local leaders; civic growth; and, other local exemplars) and are brought to life through fast facts, dates, timelines, artefacts, and 600 photos.
